Hugging Face Ships 207 Apache 2.0 WebGPU Kernels and Browser Fleet Benchmarks
Hugging Face WebAI released a kernels loader with 207 Apache 2.0 WebGPU kernels plus Fleet, an in-browser GPU benchmarking suite that can privately contribute correctness and performance evidence from real devices.
Hugging Face published a JavaScript kernels loader on September 1, 2026 for optimized WebGPU kernels hosted on the Hub, together with an initial collection of 207 Apache 2.0 kernels under the webgpu-kernels organization. The same post launches Fleet, an in-browser GPU benchmarking and testing suite that can privately contribute correctness and performance evidence from real devices.
Each kernel is packaged as its own Hub repository rather than a loose shader file. Cards document operation semantics, inputs, outputs, attributes, and supported data types, while repositories ship manifest.json contracts, test.json correctness cases, bench.json workloads, provenance metadata, and parameterized WGSL Jinja templates.
Benchmark claims versus ORT WebGPU
On an Apple M4 GPU, Hugging Face compared its kernels with ONNX Runtime WebGPU 1.30.0-dev.20260826-b1f76d586a. Starting from 1,756 test cases across all 207 operations, the team kept 809 cases where both sides produced matching outputs and reliable timings. Across those comparisons, Hugging Face reports a 2.57x geometric-mean speedup and 1.90x median speedup, with 629 wins, 176 losses, and 4 ties. Sample operation tables include Add at 3.52x, Softmax at 2.11x, LayerNormalization at 2.22x, and MatMul at 1.14x.
Timings measure GPU work only and exclude loading, session setup, uploads, shader compile, and readback. Hugging Face notes it is working with the ONNX Runtime team to upstream improvements for the broader ORT Web ecosystem.
Why kernels first
The post frames WebGPU kernels as the foundation for faster browser inference. Fleet widens coverage beyond a single lab GPU by letting users run correctness and performance checks in-browser and, with consent, contribute private evidence that guides variant selection and tuning.
